Hi Joe! I am dying to ask you this. I kinda feel bad to ask you without paying coaching fee...but let me try!
For cruising with greenland paddle, do you use different stroke from your wing paddle or "euro blade"?
Wher do you plant your blade, at your feet or at your knee area? And where do you exit the blade? Where dose your upper hand end up? at he center line of deck, or dose it gose cross the center and gose all the way to the side?
Do you use high angle stroke with GP?
I am wondering, after your Van-Island challenge, are you going to do any clinic in BC area??? | |

Hi Setsuko, For me, my forward stroke with a Greenland Paddle is very similar to a forward stroke using a Wing paddle which I also enjoy using now and then. I never use a Euro paddle anymore though, other than when on the water and swapping paddles with people who wish to try the GP. So to describe my forward stroke, I use a lot of torso rotation and will plant the blade well forward. I will also use a canted stroke, with the upper edge of the blade angled forward somewhat. This adds a lot of power to the GP froward stroke. When racing, I use a very high angle stroke. For fast cruising, I am a moderately high angle still but not quite as aggressive as when in a race. I tend to never use a low angle stroke for cruising though and find it inefficient. At the end of my stroke, the blade exits as it passes the hip and slices outwards as smoothly as possible. For the upper hand, it will pass over past the center line yes, very much like a wing paddle stroke. Nice thing with Greenland Paddles is that they do work well with a very wide variety of different techniques. As for doing clinics after finishing the Vancouver Island expedition, I'd be interested in that if enough people wanted to sign up. I could put on a GP strokes clinic, most likely in either Comox or Nanaimo. Might take a day off after the expedition before teaching though, I think the body will need a short break by then Cheers...Joe

Thanks! It works well with many different strokes? I see! That is why I hear all kinds of different thing from people and someties it is confusing specially when I am told like I am doing something "wrong" rather than " different". I like to have a few different techniques available to me. I tend to get bored after doing same move a while and changing strokes works like refreshment.
Now, If I plant the blade at my feet, I can burry the blade only half. And to burry whole blade to start rotating my torso, I have to plant it right ahead of my knee. Should I NOT worry about too much about "whole blade should be burried to start pulling phase" and just reach as far as I can to foot area?
One more, Dose your elbow moves same path with your wing paddle stroke? Or dose it stay low closer to your side? My understanding about " elbow at right below the shoulder hight" is to give more power to that arm which is pushing the shaft. If you use lower elbow position, what is your thought about benefit of it?
Thanks!! It is great to hear it clear from someone like you who dose long distance and racing.
